Locust Grove, OK's Country Cottage Said Responsible For Death and Illnesses

Locust Grove, Oklahoma, population 1400,   is about 50 miles east of Tulsa.  A local hamburger joint called D.J.'s was made famous by local country-western star Mica Roberts.  But an apparent outbreak of E. coli 0157:H7 is making another Locust Grove restaurant famous in the worst way.

The Country Cottage is at the center of an ongoing possible outbreak of E. coli 0157:H7 that is now said to be responsible for at least one death and three dozen illnesses.  The name of the person who died has not yet been released.   As many as 30 people suffering from symptoms of E coli are being care for at hospitals in Tulsa, Beggs, Bixby and Pryor.

The Country Cottage is also known at the Blue House to locals who frequent it.

When we have more information from Oklahoma health officials, we will be back with an update.

Fields...yes! Go to the Dr. it may help them track the cause -- another person was found dead a few minutes ago -- ME is here now checking for E.coli. Very sad.

EESmith - August 28, 2008 11:31 AM

You should get your facts straigt! There are only 10 people confirmed to have E-coli and it has not been proven to have been started from The Country Cottage in Oklahoma! The Health inspector who inspected the resturaunt said there was only 3 minor violations.
The MEDIA blew this way out of perportion!! They didn't mention that the man who died had left the country!!! No do they tell you his father "a PREACHER" is also a BANKER!! They also failed to mention that PRYOR, ADAIR and SALINA are all rivals of Locust Grove.
My son works at the Country Cottage, He's been eating there EVERY NITE since the first of june 2008 and He is NOT SICK!!!!
NO sources of E-COLI have been traced back to the Country Cottage. The only thing the victims (10 of them) had in common was that they all ate at the Country Cottage. How do we know that the man who died didn't bring something back to the states and contaminate others?!!!
Locust Grove, Ok is a small town with a population of fabout 1400 the towns people all eat there all the time and no one in locust grove is sick with E-COLI!!!
My husband, 3 boys and I ate there too, and none of us got sick at all! No E-Coli, nothing!!
I hope when this is all over with, the media will make a PUBLIC APOLOGY to the owner of the COUNTRY COTTAGE and to the towns people of locust grove,Ok!!
I for one am very proud of my small town and I proudly stand up and support the owners of the Country Cottage and the people of Locut grove.

PS> The country Cottage only expressed their sympathy for the victims who are ill and for the family of the man who died. They NEVER said they were responsible!!!

Lucy,

They've investigated and several people from the State Health Dept have said that the Cottage is DEFINITELY one of the sources, if not THE source of the outbreak. Get your facts straight.

Fields: It might be a good idea to contact the health dept...just to be on the safe side.

I ate there on the 23rd with a group of 7 people. 3 days later another member and I suddenly experienced diarehhea for 2 days. We both felt fine after the 2 days. We both had the same symptoms (no fever or nausea, diarehhea only). We heard about the outbreak afterwards.

CL - August 30, 2008 7:44 AM

Also, according to a report from KOCO states 2 employees are among the sick, the restuarant has had 88 health code violations since 2004 (mostly for cross contamination), and that the the Dept of Health said it was most likely caused by cross contamination in the resturant.
I don't understand the idea that three other towns are "rivals" of Locust Grove and the media. This implies a conspiracy to smear Locust Grove.

WAKE UP. this is terrible, I am afraid, as I have family there.. but someome wants to be the HERO, here so makes snap gudgements. And I don't want negliance to end more lives. Fast judgements and unprofessional testing.. This information would not be spread OR CONVIENTLY leaked that it was the CC, if someone was doing their job. Seems mity strange that all of the CC employees wash their hands constantly, wash fruit & veggies, cook with the water, wash down the tables & wash dishes, drink water & soft drinks with ice cubes & eat the food.. use the restrooms, wash the floors.. handle everything --- WHY ARE THEY NOT ALL DEAD... NOW THAT WOULD OPEN MY EYES... Was a spreadsheet compiled with data from the deceased & ill, with details -this is important people. you don't get the guy with the average c's to f's in school do this testing. you get prof and experience people and you don't make judgements until testing is complete. data-- detailed data-- yep like in the movies. Every see Quincy,. maybe just a tv program but true stuff.. Did the people that actually ate at this restraunt go to the bathroom (wash or not wash their hands), sit in the same chair, eat the same item on the menue? drink the same drink? maybe milk. (remember previously an outbreak they ruined the lives of the tomatoe farmers? yep all resptraunts & stores stoped buying and selling tomaotes, then those same so called testes said opps maybe it was actually the lettuce). See this is what I am talking about.. Did the people that handle the menues at the CC get sick as well as the waiter? Did all of these peple stop at the same gas station, use the same pump? go to the bathroon at the gas station? did they all go to the bank (the same bank) did the cashier get sick, and the people at the bank that took that money get sick? This is actually general research. this information is just the tiny start. WAS ANY OF THIS DONE? This is very easily transmitted, did these people hold the same newspaper while waiting to be seated? all use the same atm. We don't want the pook guy that test the chemicals to be in charge of doing this investigation. Unfortunally, due to politics and GOSSIP, sometimes one and the same, stops real progress. They say it is the CC. HOW DID IT GET TO THE CC PEOPLE--- You people in Locust Grove. STAND UP AND DEMAND TO SEE THESE SPREADSHEETS AND RESEARCH. YOU HAVE RIGHTS AS CITIZENS NOT TO BE TREATED LIKE MORONS. If they have proof your love one was sick or died then find the key. that is the answer. Don't make this a BAD lawhyers way to make a million.... for those at the restraunt.. if you were a party of 4-- did you all get it? if not why... MAKE THEM SHOW THE KEY TO THIS , don't let them get a scape goat in the CC. cause you can bet , it did not start there. My blessings to the people at CC, owners & employees, as your lifes are crap now. and the ones that lost love one and dealt with this illness. MAKE THE PEOPLE WITH THE BIG BUCKS GET TO THE REAL BOTTOM OF THES AND STOP IT THE KEY. Bless you all.

Cathy, Lucy and EE Smith

How do you feel now? It has been verified. I hate that this has happened, but probably not as much as the parents of the children on dialysis machines now.
It may not have been their fault-it may be due to water or a single worker or whatever but it DID come from the Country Cottage restaurant. I have family members affected.

People are sometimes stupid. They worry about terrible things happening, might not help P.R. for a business, and don`t take into account this is a life threatening disease. The PEOPLE have a right to know what`s going on with people getting sick and one dead that links to the COUNTRY COTTAGE. If they are not to blame, let the health officials do their job and find the cause. It`s amazing how people tell of the constant washing of hands at the COUNTRY COTTAGE. Maybe they should of stopped the 24 hour hand wash to tend to other duties needed to prevent all those HEALTH VIOLATIONS. Get a grip and a conflict of interest doesn`t help the COTTAGE with people saying how great and clean it is. Sounds more like scared family and friends thinking their comments are gonna help the "COTTAGE CAUSE".

bgoodman - September 1, 2008 8:14 AM

This gets crazier by the day .Fact-They have proven this strain has not been here before but seen in south America and Europe.Fact-They had illegals working there. What you don't know is they are checking this out.Why do you think they keep coming up clean? They will never find the source. These illegals are long gone .Many people who have a heart are coming forward with this information instead of protecting these people. How many more people need to get sick or even die before we focus on finding the problem fixing it and making sure it never happens again.I think we owe all these people .If by some chance the cottage owners are in the clear than if they are the good people you all claim them to be they will understand and do what ever has to be done. this includes coming clean with the truth about these workers.

Not posted in the news or on line, is the fact that when this outbreak occured there was also an outbreak of viral diarrea that lasted 1 to 2 days in Northeast Ok., southeast Kansas and southwest Missouri. Many people had diarrea in the area, including my family here in Kansas and we did not eat at C.C.. The e-coli strain had an incubation time of 4 days to 2 weeks. If you got sick in less than 4 days it was not e-coli.
This strain was highly contagious, if someone ate at the C.C. who already had it, they could have contaminated utinsels, door knobs, chairs, plates, etc. what ever was toughed. This could have been out side cotamination that was washed away when the staff did regular cleaning duties. If the gentleman who died was out of the country within the last two weeks of his life, he could have been ill and not known it yet. We will never know for sure, for his families sake I hope not, it would be devistating.

This comment is in reference to bgoodmans comment posted on September 1st. I am a white male 30 yrs of age and for you to post a comment refering to illegals working as a possible cause of this is absurd.. I graduated high school from Locust Grove and ate and the Country Cottage many times with my high school football team..My best friend in school worked there through college and is now a principle of the elemetry school.. Your acquistions of illegals even remotally resposibly for this is stupid and you need to take a hard look at yourself in the mirror and then try to call your self a good human being.. P.S. Make sure you wash your hand because if your white, black, your safe but if your so called illegal then you automically have an illness and its your fault.. Grow up they are probably cleaner than you are... Your rubettal is apprecieated...

Cotton Crites - October 8, 2008 10:04 AM

Would someone please keep me posted. I live in the Dallas area and travel here and CC is one of the high lights of the trip. It is sooooo hard to find good food. I believe you will agree.
Thanks

Just FYI, the young man who died from the ecoli outbreak was out of the county, over 2 months before he ate at the country cottage! So quit blaming that! His father is NOT a banker, or a preacher! not that any of that should matter! And I cannot believe this place is opening up again! After all the hurt and damage they have caused!
