The Cozy Vale Creamery’s whole and skim milk and cream are distributed through seven retail outlets in Pierce, Thurston and King counties. The products being recalled all have sell-by dates of December 6 or earlier.

The recall was begun after Washington State Department of Agriculture environmental swabbing at the facility discovered that locations in the milking parlor and processing areas were contaminated with the E. coli O157:H7 bacteria.

Three illnesses have been reported in Cozy milk customers since August.

They products were sold retail at the farm store and at Marlene’s Market in Tacoma, two Olympia Food Co-Op locations in Olympia, Olympia Local Foods in Tumwater, Yelm Co-op in Yelm, Mt. Community Co-op in Eatonville and Marlene’s Market in Federal Way.

Commercial Meat Co., a Los Angeles, Calif., establishment is recalling approximately 377,775 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following ground beef products are subject to recall:

• 5,10,15,20,30,40,50 and 60 lb. cases of bulk ground beef

• 5,10 and 20 lb. cases of ground beef patties

• 10,15,20,30,40 and 50 lb. cases of ground beef taco

• 5,10,15,20,25,30,40,50 and 60 lb. cases of ground beef chili

Each case bears a label with the establishment number “EST. 4873” inside the USDA mark of inspection. The products subject to recall were produced between Sept. 7, 2011 and Oct. 6, 2011 and were shipped to restaurants in California and Nevada, as well as one Federal establishment in California for further processing.

The problem was discovered through routine FSIS monitoring which confirmed a positive result for E. coli O157:H7. The company did not hold product pending test results, resulting in this recall. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Manning Beef, LLC, a Pico Rivera, Calif. establishment, is voluntarily recalling approximately 80,000 pounds of beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following products are subject to recall:

• Combo bins of BroPack Inc Beef Manufacturing Trimmings “65/35, 50/50 or 85/15” produced on Sept. 23, 2011.

• Combo bins of Paso Prime Beef Manufacturing Trimmings “65/35, 50/50 or 85/15” produced on Sept. 23, 2011.

• 30 and 60 lb. boxes of primal cuts, subprimal cuts and boxed beef produced on Sept. 23, 2011.

The establishment is recalling a variety of beef primal and subprimal cuts (such as top round and tri tip) and manufacturing trimmings due, in part, to insanitary conditions as reflected by an unusually high number of confirmed positive E. coli O157:H7 test results conducted by the establishment on the manufacturing trimmings.

Tyson Fresh Meats Inc., an Emporia, Kan. establishment, is recalling approximately 131,300 pounds of ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The following products are subject to recall:

• 5-pound chubs of Kroger-brand “GROUND BEEF 73% LEAN – 27% FAT,” packed in 40-pound cases containing eight chubs. Cases bear an identifying product code of “D-0211 QW.” These products were produced on Aug. 23, 2011 and were shipped to distribution centers in Ind. and Tenn. for retail sale.

• 3-pound chubs of Butcher’s Brand “GROUND BEEF 73% LEAN – 27% FAT,” packed in 36-pound cases each containing 12 chubs. Cases bear an identifying product code of “D-0211 LWIF.” These products were produced on Aug. 23, 2011 and were shipped to distribution centers in N.C. and S.C. for retail sale.

3-pound chubs of a generic label “GROUND BEEF 73% LEAN – 27% FAT,” packed in 36-pound cases each containing 12 chubs. Cases bear an identifying product code of “D-0211 LWI.” These products were produced on Aug. 23, 2011 and were shipped to distribution centers in Del., Fla., Ga., Md., Ill., Ind., Mo., N.Y., Ohio, Tenn., Texas and Wis. for retail sale.

The products subject to recall have a “BEST BEFORE OR FREEZE BY” date of “SEP 12 2011” and the establishment number “245D” ink jetted along the package seam. When available, the retail distribution list(s) will be posted on FSIS’ website at www.fsis.usda.gov/FSIS_Recalls/Open_Federal_Cases/index.asp.

FSIS and the establishment are concerned that consumers may freeze the product before use and that some product may be in consumers’ freezers. FSIS strongly encourages consumers to check their freezers and immediately discard any product subject to this recall.

FSIS became aware of the problem yesterday (Sept. 26, 2011) when the agency was notified by the Ohio Department of Health of E. coli 0157:H7 illnesses located in Butler County. Illness onset dates range from Sept. 8, through Sept. 11, 2011. The on-going investigation involved collecting leftover ground beef from the patients’ home on Sept. 19 which tested positive for E. coli O157:H7 by the Ohio Department of Agriculture’s laboratory today (Sept. 27).

Palo Duro Meat, an Amarillo, Texas, establishment, is recalling 40,000 pounds of frozen fine ground beef products that may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall include:

40-lb boxes containing four 10-lb chubs of fine ground beef.

Each case bears “Est. 7282” inside the USDA mark of inspection and a production code of 19110.

The frozen product was produced on Sept. 9, 2011, and shipped to two warehouses in Georgia for further distribution to institutions. The institutions include six school districts in Georgia associated with the National School Lunch Program. The bulk of the product has not left the warehouses and at this time, FSIS is not aware of any product having been served as part of school lunches in the districts.

The problem was discovered by the company after a review of lab results that confirmed a positive result for E. coli O157:H7 on September 22. The problem may have occurred as a result of a sample tracking error that allowed the product in question to be inadvertently shipped into commerce. FSIS and the company have received no reports of illnesses associated with consumption of these products. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact a healthcare provider.

Pride & Joy Creamery, LLC of Granger, WA is recalling raw fluid milk because it may be contaminated with Escherichia coli bacteria (E. coli) that can cause serious illness. The unpasteurized milk was sold at the farm and distributed through nine retail outlets in King, Pierce, Snohomish and Skagit counties.

The recall was initiated after sampling by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) discovered that the product was contaminated with toxin-producing E. coli. Pride & Joy Dairy and WSDA are continuing their investigation into the source of the problem. WSDA and other public health officials are exploring the possibility that there has been human illness linked to this milk.

Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infections may cause severe diarrhea, stomach cramps and bloody stool. Symptoms generally appear three to four days after exposure, but can take as long as nine days to appear. Anyone experiencing these symptoms should contact a health care provider.

Consumers who have purchased Pride & Joy raw milk with expiration dates of 9/30/2011 and 9/31/11 are urged to return it to the place of purchase for a full refund. Consumers with questions may contact the company at 509-854-1389.

Retail raw milk is legal to buy and sell in Washington, but there are serious potential health risks. Consumers should read the warning label on the retail raw milk container carefully and ask their retailer to verify the milk was produced and processed by a WSDA-licensed operation.

The list of bulk and packaged nuts under recall for possible contamination with E. coli has been expanded to include snacks that do not contain walnuts.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Toronto-based Johnvince Foods said that the list has been changed to alter the code of the bulk walnuts and to include more potentially contaminated prepackaged nuts and other snacks. “It’s basically a follow-up of our investigation into the processing,” Garfield Balsom, a food safety and recall specialist with CFIA in Ottawa, said Thursday.

The new additions “have been processed using the contaminated lot or in same time frame.”

Eating foods tainted with E. coli can lead to abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Severe cases of E. coli-related illnesses can be fatal.

No illnesses related to E. coli-tainted walnuts have been reported.

The nuts were imported from the United States and may have been distributed nationally, CFIA said.

The agency announced the initial Johnvince walnut recall on Sept. 1.

In April, walnuts were removed from bulk bins and store shelves after more than a dozen Canadians got sick.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency and Johnvince Foods announced a recall on Thursday of some President’s Choice and Reddi Snack walnuts because the products may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.  The raw, shelled walnuts products were imported from the U.S. and packaged in Canada, the CFIA said.  The products were distributed across Canada.

“There have been no confirmed illnesses associated with the consumption of these products,” the agency said in a release.

Johnvince Foods of Downsview, Ont. is voluntarily recalling the affected products from the marketplace and CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

In another walnut recall in January, one person in Quebec died and 13 other Canadians fell sick with an E. coli bacterial infection with the same genetic fingerprint. Of the 14 reported cases of E. coli infection, nine people consumed walnuts and seven ate walnuts from the same distributor, the Public Health Agency of Canada said at the time.

National Beef Packing Co. LLC, a Dodge City, Kan., establishment, is recalling approximately 60,424 pounds of ground beef products that may be adulterated with E. coli O157:H7, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall include:

622.jpgDutch authorities recalled red beet sprouts from three countries Thursday after samples were found to be contaminated with a strain of E. coli bacteria that was apparently less dangerous than the one causing Europe’s deadly E. coli crisis.

German health officials, meanwhile, reported that three more people died of the ailment Thursday, raising the toll to 29 in less than six weeks.

The Dutch Food Safety Authority said laboratories were still trying to identify the Dutch strain of E. coli, but said there have been no immediate reports of serious illness from it.

Only one Dutch grower, a company called Hamu, was found with contaminated beets, and other produce grown on its farms were cleared of suspicion, said Esther Filon, a spokeswoman for the Dutch regulation agency.
