Since mid-2007, 33,000,000 pounds of hamburger has been recalled, according to the Des Moines Register. There have been hundreds of illnesses and several reported deaths.

There were six cases of E. coli reported in Polk County in October, according to the Polk County Health Department, which officials said is a typical number.

During the month, a 16-month-old girl and a 17-month-old boy who attended the same Urbandale child care center were infected with E. coli. In July, the Iowa Department of Public Health issued a warning after three children developed illnesses linked to a rare strain of E. coli. The children, all 5 years and younger, were not hospitalized. Two of the three children visited private and municipal pools before getting sick, health department officials said at the time.

  • We will all miss Kayla very much.
    She was NEVER mean to anyone.
    She seemed like she had a perfect life;
    She had lots of friends, a good,loving,casring boyfriend, Kurtis Timmins, she was good a sports, she had good grades, and a loving family. We will all miss her very much. She didn’t deserve to go.

    I didn’t actually know Kayla… Instead I heard of her from a good online friend who went to school with her. I just wanted to say that, even though we don’t know her, our whole community is grieving for her.

    I knew her and it was a horrible event. She will be sorely missed.

    Kayla was my niece and she is sorely missed, she was a wonderful person. We had the joy of having her down to stay with us a few weeks this summer and she had such a wonderful life ahead of her it’s just tragic that this happened. It will be a long time before anyone is able to get over this I’m sure. But the outreach from the community is awesome and people who have sent cards, reached out to the family, donated to her memorial because they knew her or the family or just because of the story not even knowing her or the family lets you know there still are good people doing good things, but it’s sad something so tragic had to happen to let us know that. My husband and I have clung to our faith in God that he knows better than us and we feel so blessed to have known her, someone God had a need for, if only for a short 14 years. She is missed everyday and we just try to keep Rick, Dana and Kristi in our thoughts and prayers everyday. We love you Kayla!!!!!

    It will be 1 year tomorrow, Nov. 2nd that we lost Kayla. Our lives have been forever changed. She was such a special girl, so full of life and love for all. It’s been a long, sad year for all of us that knew and loved Kayla. I hope and pray that some day soon some one will come up with something that will prevent this horrible tragedy from happening to any other person. You will be forever loved and missed.

  • I feel really bad for you. We are greiving everywhere:(

    I remember reading this story in a magazine a while back, and it astounded me at how quickly a person could go from being healthy to having to be on life support. My prayers go out to her family, her friends, and anyone else who’s life was touched by this young woman who’s life was cut short.
